St. Patrick Catholic Church The first Catholic service in Decatur was held in July 1853 and was conducted by Father Pendergast. Mary Phalin was the first child to be baptized in Macon County. Father Thomas Cusack became rector in 1854 and stayed until 1859. A frame church was built in 1857 located in the 700 block of West Prairie. Father Cusack married Peter Dunn and Mary Dempsey in this church on October 4, 1858. The Dunn Family has been members of St. Patrick Church since 1857, 144 years. The church below was built in 1863-1864 and located on East North Street.
